Introduction

Renault Twingo

A small car designed for urban driving, the Renault Twingo is aimed squarely at drivers on a budget, with prices ranging from £7,395 to £12,495 on the road. There are few bells and whistles, but it certainly makes a great choice for buyers looking for an economical first new car.

The Renault Twingo Extreme has petrol-engined options of 60bhp 8-valve 1.2litre, 75bhp 16-valve 1.2litre and 110bhp 1.2-litre TCE Turbo. The 60bhp 8-valve 1.2 will do 0-60mph in 15 seconds with a maximum speed of 96mph. Nobody would buy a car like this for its performance, but it is quite adequate for urban driving and the occasional long journey.

The Renault Twingo Freeway is the cheapest model in the range, with just one engine option, a 1.2 litre petrol. 0-60mph takes 15 seconds with a maximum speed of 96mph and combined fuel consumption of 50.5mpg. Extras are basic and few and far between, though it does boast driver and passenger airbags, remote central locking, ABS braking with EBD and brake assist, plus a CD stereo.

Stepping things up a notch, the Renault Twingo GT has a 1.2litre TCE (Turbo Control Efficiency) petrol engine. It manages a respectable 0-62mph in 9.8 seconds with a maximum speed of 117mph and combined fuel consumption of 47.8mpg.

The Renault Twingo Renault Sport 133 is aimed at the sportier young driver and includes 16inch alloy wheels, a chrome tail pipe and wide air intake in the front bumper. It is also available as the Renault Twingo Renault Sport 133 Cup, which races from 0-60mph in 8.7 seconds with a maximum speed of 124mph and combined fuel consumption of 40mpg.
